Understanding the Do's & Don'ts of Braces

  • What foods do I have to avoid with braces?

    • Chewy delights: Bagels and licorice might tempt you, but their sticky nature can be a menace to your braces.
    • Crunchy munchies:  Nuts and ice can cause breakages, so it's best to avoid them.
    • Sticky sweets: Caramels and sugary gums can get lodged in your braces, leading to a sticky situation.
    • Direct bites: Biting into hard foods like apples or corn on the cob can dislodge your braces.
  • What foods are braces friendly

    • Dairy delights: Soft cheeses, puddings, and milkshakes are not only safe but soothing for your braces.
    • Gentle grains: Enjoy pasta and soft-cooked rice without worry.
    • Tender meats: Soft-cooked chicken and meatballs are protein-packed and braces-safe.
    • Seafood selections: Tuna, salmon, and crab cakes are on your braces-friendly menu.
    • Veggies and fruits: Steamed veggies and soft fruits like bananas are nutritious and gentle on your braces.
    • Sweet treats: Indulge in soft cakes, Jell-O, and ice cream without nuts occasionally.
  • How do I manage soreness and sensitivity?

It's normal to experience some tenderness when you first get your braces. To alleviate this:

    • Saltwater Solution: Swish with a warm saltwater mix to reduce soreness and inflammation.
    • Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter pain medication can help ease more intense discomfort.
    • Wax Application: We provide dental wax to cover braces and protect your inner cheek and lip.
  • Can I play sports with braces?

Game, Set, Match — we have great news for athletes! You can still play sports even while undergoing orthodontic treatment! If you do play specific sports such as football, wrestling, or martial arts, it’s recommended that you wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and your braces. It is recommended that you purchase a mouthguard that is specifically states 'for braces'.  Brand examples include Shock Doctor and Under Armour. These can be found at Walmart, Dicks, Academy Sports, and Amazon.  Do not use the boil and bite style mouthguards as they can get stuck in your braces.  Let your doctor know if you need help finding the right mouthguard for the best protection.

In case of a sports emergency, be sure to immediately check your mouth and braces for damage. If you notice any loose teeth contact your dentist.  If you notice any loose brackets please contact our office. You can temporarily relieve the discomfort by applying wax and/or rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater.
